I thought I
understood this, but clearly I don't.
I have an .ESM
(Morrowind Comes Alive) which creates 'serving girl' NPCs carrying
food items that have reasonably powerful potion effects. I don't
want them in my game. So I loaded up the ESM in TESCS and deleted
the offending items from the inventory of the NPCs and gave them
some default game food items instead (e.g. kwama eggs, bread). I
saved the result as an ESP.
I started a new game and went to
one of these NPCs, only to find that she is selling the items I
deleted as well as the new items I gave her. I tried a few other
serving girls and they are all the same.
I know that you
can't delete objects in an ESM, so an ESP is what people use. I also
know about dirty saves, but I started a new game. For the life of me
I can't figure out how to delete these damnable
items.
Thoughts, ideas: - I tried deleting the NPC
references from the cells and then adding the NPCs back in. Didn't
work. - I made sure there are no items in chests that the NPCs
are grabbing. There aren't. - I deleted the source objects in the
ESP. Didn't work. - I made sure there were no other mods
influencing the same NPCs. There aren't. - I thought that the
TESTool 'merge objects' feature was adding the objects back into the
inventories, but I opened the merge object ESP and the NPC inventory
is exactly what I want it to be.
I must be missing something
really obvious. Is it just not possible to delete inventory items?
I'm sure I've seen it done before.

This might help?
Could you open it in the
Morrowind Enchanted Editor? IIRC it can open and save .esm so you
could open the .esm and delete the references from there?

That link is helpful, but not
necessarily for this particular issue. The problem with changing the
ESM is that if the mod maker releases a new version of the ESM
(highly likely) then I am going to have to make the changes all over
again. I prefer to create a 'patch' ESP that contains the changes.
Generally, the patch ESP works even with a new version of the ESM.
However, if I cannot solve this problem any other way then I will
resort to using MEE to change the ESM.
Thanks!

You're
Welcome
I'm sure there's something 've forgotten too, but I
think that editing the .esm "should" work OK

I'm kind of
surprised that this question has the community stumped. I suppose
most mods add to NPC inventory rather than delete, so maybe this
issue has never come up before.
I did a search on the subject
before posting and I saw no reference to it, except in the context
of dirty saves.

It seems like
you should be able to make an esp file that is dependant upon the
esm in question wherein you remove the offending items. As long as
that esp gets loaded before the esm, it should work.

You could
always open up the console and remove the items like that.

I tried to
replicate what you did but it seemed to work fine (as long as I used
a clean save). All I noticed was that there are several NPCs named
"Server Girl". I woudl think that's obvious, but maybe not depending
on how you had the list sorted. That's all I cna think of.

Yes in theory it should work
fine, but it doesn't. I am starting a new game and I am definately
looking at the right serving girl because I changed all of them and
double-checked everything.
It's a total mystery.
You
said you tried it and it worked. Does what I did match what you
did: 1. Open the ESM 2. Open the NPC 3. Delete items from
NPC inventory 4. Save the NPC 5. Save the changes as a new
ESP 6. Check the ESP so that it loads with the other
mods
The only thing I can think of is that my ESP has somehow
become corrupted. I did have an issue where I accidentally clicked
on the "Return" button under an NPC's AI tab, which crashed TESCS.
Maybe that screwed up my ESP? It looks fine when the contents are
viewed though.
Guess I'll start from scratch and see what
happens.

First, using
an .esp to delete an item in an .esm file works fine, including
deleting NPC inventory items (I just did a quick test to verify what
I remembered).
So the problem is something else...
One
person had a similar problem recently with delete's not 'sticking'.
Turned out he was cleaning the .esp file with TESAME, and in the
process was cleaning the deletion.
Do your testing without using any utilities like TESAME or TESTool,
which could be causing the problem or confusing the
symptoms.
Other possibilities:
Did you create a new
character with no mods installed to test with?
Were
you careful to not save the game with the mods installed? On
the game's Data Files screen, if you highlight a saved game, the
'Parent Masters' box will list the .esm and .esp files it uses.
Check that to make sure you didn't inadvertently include a mod in
your save game.
Are you testing with no other mods
enabled except the .esm and .esp file you're testing?
Make
absolutely sure you're looking at the same .esm and .esp file in the
game that you're looking at in the Construction Set: check the
exact name of the files checked on the Data Files screen in
the game and on the Data Files screen in the editor.
This
would be a lot easier to figure out if I could lean over your
shoulder and watch exactly what you're doing.
Short of that, the above are some possibilities to look
at.
Note: to troubleshoot something like this, simplify
things as much as possible. Don't use any other mods, don't use any
utiliies (TESAME, etc.), use an absolutely clean save to test with,
etc.
A clean install of the game, with no other mods in the
Data Files directory to get mixed up with can help a
lot.
Something else to look at:
If you load
both the .esm file and the .esp file (with the deletions) into the
Construction Set at the same time, is the NPC's inventory the way
you want it? If it is, the deletion is working and should work just
as well in the game, unless there's something else screwing things
up: dirty save, another mod, wrong NPC, wrong .esp or .esm file,
etc.

I am using TESTool to merge
the levelled lists and objects. But I checked the merged objects ESP
in TESCS and the NPC had all the right items and none of the wrong
ones. Still, its a good idea to try without using
TESTool.

I create a new character from
scratch every time and never save the game. I can go through that
ships hold with my eyes shut. I do have other mods installed though.
I don't see how they could be affecting my ESP, which loads last
(apart from the TESTool merged ESPs). But, once again, its a good
idea to try with no other mods.

Good point. I'll try
this.

Yeah the inventory looks fine
in TESCS. If I load all mods at once it still looks
fine.
I'll try your suggestions but first of all I am going
to try starting over with a new ESP and changing one NPC because I'm
beginning to think that TESCS crashing corrupted my ESP somehow.
